CENTER FOR EASTERN INDONESIAN STUDIES

CEIS is a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to exploring, preserving, and advancing the diverse cultural, social, and environmental landscapes of Eastern Indonesia. Through collaborative research, community engagement, and policy advocacy, the project aims to generate inclusive knowledge, support sustainable development, and amplify local voices. By bridging traditional wisdom and modern innovation, this project envisions a resilient and empowered Eastern Indonesia that contributes meaningfully to national and global conversations.

About the project

Starting point

The project began with a growing awareness of the lack of comprehensive and inclusive research focusing on Eastern Indonesia—a region rich in cultural heritage, natural resources, and local wisdom, yet often underrepresented in national discourse. This realization prompted scholars, activists, and local stakeholders to come together and establish a platform that not only studies the region’s complexities but also empowers its communities. The initiative emerged as a response to the urgent need for localized knowledge production, cultural preservation, and sustainable development rooted in the voices and experiences of Eastern Indonesians.
